Quinn Shalz Funeral Home

OUR STORY

In the year 1999, two remarkable men came together with a shared vision to create a sanctuary for families during their most challenging times. Michael K. Shalz, a second-generation funeral director with deep roots in the industry, partnered with his father-in-law, General John "Jack" Quinn, to form Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home in the beautiful communities of Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Mike, a proud graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, was one of only two funeral directors in Northeast Florida to hold a bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science. His extensive experience included serving as the Managing Director of the prestigious Muehlebach Funeral Home in Kansas City and as a vice president at Service Corporation International, the parent company of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home. Mike’s commitment to his profession was mirrored by his dedication to community service—he was actively involved with Hospice, the Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

General Quinn, a 1952 graduate of West Point, brought a wealth of experience and leadership to the partnership. With an impressive military career spanning 34 years, including three combat tours in Vietnam, Jack's life was a testament to service and dedication. After retiring from the Army, he transitioned to education and banking, all while remaining committed to giving back to the community through organizations like the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of Columbus.

Together, Mike and Jack built Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home on a foundation of compassion, professionalism, and community spirit. Their shared vision resonated deeply within the hearts of those they served, creating a legacy of trust and support.

Tragically, in 2006, both Mike and Jack passed away, leaving behind not only a thriving funeral home but also a profound impact on their families and community. Their legacy was carried forward by Mary Quinn-Shalz, Mike's wife and Jack's daughter, who stepped into the role of owner. After Mike’s passing Darlene Smith became the managing director. With her expertise and passion, Darlene embraced the responsibility of evolving the funeral home to meet the changing needs of the community.

Over time, Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home has become a trusted business in the beaches community, known for its personalized services and support for families. In September 2024, Darlene made a significant commitment to this legacy by purchasing the funeral home, becoming its proud owner. Under her leadership, Quinn Shalz continues to honor the values established by Mike and Jack, adapting to the world around us while staying true to the mission of compassion and care.

Today, Quinn Shalz Funeral Home stands as a testament to resilience, community, and love—a place where every life is celebrated, and every family is supported. As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to the principles that have guided us since our founding, ensuring that we are always here for our community in their times of need.
