With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of William (Bill) H. Hagerty, Jr., who left us on August 20th, 2024, at the age of 88 at his home in Ponte Vedra Beach after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 11, 1935, in New Brunswick, NJ, where he grew up, graduating from St. Peter’s High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University.
Bill served as a second-class specialist in the Army in Germany, then pursued a career as an FBI agent in Newark, NJ, where he met the love of his life, Patricia. He served as a Special Agent and Profiler for the FBI, retiring in 1986 after thirty years of distinguished service. Following his retirement, Bill took a position with the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), where he taught interviews and interrogations, sex crimes, and hostage negotiating, to name just a few, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience.
Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. He regularly lectured at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Father William Kelly. He was known affectionately as Bill, Dad, Grampy Bill, or Uncle Billy, touching many lives with his kindness. He will be remembered for his passion for the NY Yankees, Notre Dame Football, and his love of golf, which he enjoyed playing with his friends every Saturday morning.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Kelli H. Mazza (Greg), Megan Hagerty, and Jennifer H. Chessor (Uriah); his sons, William (Billy) H. Hagerty III (Zaida) and James Hagerty (Sharai); son-in-law, Larry Willey (Erin), and his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Grampy Bill: Clay and Cole Mazza, Evan and Nicholas Willey, Izabelle and William Hagerty, Noah and Chloe Hagerty, and Liam, Landry, and Logan Chessor; as well as his great-grandchildren Kennedy, Colton, and Riley Mazza. Also, brother-in-law, Thomas James; sister-in-law, Ann Marie Hagerty. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia J. Hagerty; daughter, Erin H. Willey; parents, William and Henrietta Hagerty; and siblings, James Hagerty, Helen Christian, and Maryanne Hagerty Snesky.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., August 29, 2024 in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Jacksonville Beach, with Reverend William Kelly as Celebrant, followed by a reception in the Family Life Center. The Committal Service will be at 2:30 pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
