Virginia Ann Donnelly Meeks, 86, died Tuesday, September 20, 2022 surrounded by her family. Born Virginia Ann Lewis in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of George Philip and Marion Louise Lewis, nee Alsfeld.
After growing up in Newport, RI, Virginia made the move to Boston College where she received her nursing degree in 1958. Following graduation, she received a fellowship to attend Catholic University and received her master’s degree in 1962. For more than 20 years, Virginia served as a Chief Psychiatric Nurse at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC and often testified as an expert witness in federal criminal cases.
After retiring in 2002, Virginia moved to South Carolina and enjoyed traveling with her family to Portugal, Aruba, Alaska, and Las Vegas.
She is survived by her daughters, Laura (Christopher) Lamar of Arlington, Virginia and Maureen Donnelly of Jacksonville, Florida, as well as several nieces, nephews, stepchildren, and step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Leslie James Meeks, her eldest daughter, Lisa Anne Donnelly Watson, and her brother, Dr. George P. Lewis, Jr.
A burial service will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at 12:30 pm St. Columba's Catholic Cemetery 465 Browns Ln, Middletown, RI 02842. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ms. Donnelly Meeks’ memory to Community Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation, Anne and Donald McGraw Center for Caring, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or give online at www.communityhospice.com/give designation: “Anne and Donald McGraw Center for Caring”.
