Thomas Edwin Stinson, Jr. (1953-2017)
Ed Stinson of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on March 20, 2017 at the McGraw Center for Caring. He was born in Gadsden, Alabama the son of the late Thomas Edwin and Julia Brown Stinson. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Diana (Graef), children Emily “Em” and Thomas III “Trey”; brother Howell Scott Stinson, sister Robin Stinson Maxwell and her husband John, brother Andrew Brown Stinson and his wife Kristin; and brother-in-law Captain Michael H. Graef and his wife Isabel.
Ed’s career in banking spans over 40 years, where he has served in various executive management positions in the Florida and Alabama banking communities. He was currently the Chief Financial Officer for Florida Capital Bank, N.A. He has also served as CFO of American Enterprise Bank until its merger with Fidelity Bank last year. Previously, he served as President and CEO of Cygnet Private Bank prior to its sale to the Florida Bank Group and CFO of Florida Banks, Inc. Early in his career he served as President and CEO of two independent banks in Northwest Florida and held various management positions in Alabama financial institutions.
Ed was a dedicated volunteer leader with the American Diabetes Association for more than 20 years and served as the Secretary/Treasurer of the National Board of Directors and as a Member and Chair of the Jacksonville Community Leadership Board. Because of his tireless effort and leadership in the fight to stop diabetes, Mr. Stinson was recognized as a member of the Association’s Pinnacle Society and Summit Circle and was awarded the Association’s Charles Kopke Medal for Service. He was affectionately known as the local Community Leadership Board’s “Chairman for Life” because of his long-time commitment to the Association.
As an avid hunter and outdoorsman, Ed especially enjoyed weekend quail hunts at Broomsage, pheasant hunting in South Dakota with his Safari Club International friends and hunting geese in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. He loved the thrill of skydiving and SCCA club racing in his Radical open cockpit race car.
Ed was a selfless servant leader who made a difference through both his wisdom and input as well as his endearing warmth. He gave so freely of his time and talent that he inspired those around him to do more. He will be dearly missed by his family including his aunt and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
To celebrate a life well lived, a memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 on Friday March 31, 2017 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 and the American Diabetes Association, 7825 Baymeadows Way, St. 104A, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
