Terry Lee Elder, a cherished veteran of the United States Marine Corps, passed away on May 16th, 2024, after bravely battling cancer.
Born on August 24th, 1946, in Decatur, Illinois, Terry was the beloved son of Carl Jackson Elder and Bessie Alberta Guffy. He spent his formative years in Chicago, Illinois, attending Kelvyn Park High School.
At the age of 19, Terry felt the call to serve his country and enlisted in the Marine Corps. His dedication and commitment led him to achieve the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant, a testament to his unwavering devotion to duty. During the height of the Vietnam War, Terry courageously deployed and served as a helicopter door gunner assigned to H&MS 361 and 363. For his meritorious actions, he was awarded the Air Medal and Combat Aircrew Wings, embodying the valor and selflessness of the Marine Corps. After 25 years of faithful service, Terry retired in 1990, having last served with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina.
Terry is survived by his loving son, Brian Elder, and sister, Linda Vannatta. Those who knew him will fondly remember Terry for his infectious sense of humor and his steadfast dedication to his duties. During his tenure with the Blount Island Command in Jacksonville, Florida, he exhibited exemplary leadership and genuine care for his community. In his final years, he found solace and companionship at the Cove at Marsh Landing, where he continued to touch the lives of those around him.
Terry will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, close friends, former colleagues, and the community at his assisted living facility.
A Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in the chapel of Quinn Shalz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in the funeral home followed by interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery with full military honors.
