Sylvia Rose Osewalt, 85, was called to her Heavenly home August 13, 2021. She was the fifth of five daughters born in Cherry Lake, Florida, to William C. and Ruby C. Wilkinson.
Sylvia was a dedicated member of First Christian Church of the Beaches. She has faithfully served in many capacities within the church, including being a Board Chair. She was dedicated to the Florida Guardian Ad Litem Program for 31 years advocating for children and giving to those in need of a voice.
Sylvia served her country as a Wave in the United States Navy Active Duty and Reserves for 24 years, retiring as Senior Chief. Her Civil Service career expanded 36 years ending while working for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding. Sylvia volunteered with the Jacksonville Beach Police Department serving as President of the Police Academy and the Codes Enforcement for Jacksonville Beach, FL. She was a pioneer for the Duval County Court House K9 Therapy Program and was involved with the American Business Women’s Association. She enjoyed opening her home to international students.
Sylvia had a love for travel, traveling all over the world and enjoying every minute with her traveling friends. She loved her dogs, Mimi and Missy and enjoyed spending time with them.
Sylvia is survived by her sisters: Gwen E. Collins, Riverview, FL and Barbara J. Baity, Blairsville, Georgia. Sylvia was preceded in death by parents and her sisters, Vivian M. Diaz and Billie M. Osteen. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, grand and great nieces and nephews, her church family, WAVES sisters and those she has volunteered with throughout the years. Her love and guidance will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life for Sylvia at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 18, 2021 at First Christian Church of the Beaches, 2125 Ocean Front, Neptune Beach, FL 32266 with Pastor Nathan Loewen officiating. Sylvia’s burial at sea will be conducted by the United States Navy at a later date.
