Stanley Alten

Stanley R. Alten (February 8, 1936-April 30, 2018) was born and raised in Atlantic City, NJ. He graduated from New York University and served in the U.S. Army and Reserves. After completing his master's degree in English at Northeastern University in Boston, Stan went on to become Dean of Grahm Junior College, and a die-hard Patriots and Red Sox fan. He worked variously as a DJ, sportscaster, and in television production before earning a Ph.D. at Syracuse University. After completing his degree, Stan stayed on at Syracuse where he taught in the Television, Radio and Film Department at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications from 1970 until his retirement in 2008. Stan was an internationally renowned scholar and practitioner in audio production. He mentored generations of students who have gone on to illustrious careers in the communications industry. Stan was a prolific author, penning numerous articles, encyclopedia entries and 16 books, including the seminal Audio in Media, one of the leading texts on the subject for over thirty years. The book was reprinted in 10 editions and translated into many languages. An avid reader and historian of the second world war, Stan also wrote A Holocaust Odyssey. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Claudette; daughters, Ariane and Renée; and his precious pooch, Lexi Bear. In lieu of a funeral service, there will be a memorial celebration of Stan’s life in Syracuse in the fall, the details of which will be announced in August.
