Robert “Bob” Gordon Kyle, 83, passed away August 14, 2024 at his home in Jacksonville, FL. He was born April 5, 1941 in Cumberland, MD to Robert “Coach” & Margaret Kyle. He grew up in Athens, West Virginia and retired to the Jacksonville beaches area in 1997.

He is survived by his loving wife Nancy of 60 years, daughter Pamela Kromer (husband Jeffrey), son Robert G. Kyle, Jr. (wife Brooke), sister Ann Ouchark (husband Bill), brother Dr. James Kyle (wife Barbara); five grandchildren: Steven and Katherine Kromer, James; Brady and Max Kyle. Bob’s sister Janie Garnett passed away in 2021 and is survived by her husband Steve.

Bob is a second-generation Virginia Tech Hokie, preceded by Uncle Donald Cox (wife Maria), where he earned his BS Degree in Aerospace Engineering at Virginia Tech (1964), his MS Degree in Aerospace Engineering at University of Virginia (1969) and his MS Degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Virginia Tech (1972). Bob also received a graduate Fellowship Diploma from the National War College at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C (1979).

The Virginia Tech legacy continued as he married Nancy in Blacksburg after graduating from Virginia Tech in 1964. Bob’s family members that have graduated from Virginia Tech include his daughter Pamela (1992), son Robert (1997), granddaughter Katie (2022), and grandson Brady starting this Fall. Bob has arranged a scholarship to be funded posthumously at Virginia Tech for aspiring Engineers from the states of West Virginia and Virginia.

Bob’s career spanned 33 years with NASA and the CIA where he progressed from projects in supersonic aerodynamics, spacecraft stability & control; design & development of numerous lightweight fighter aircraft including Air Force’s F-16 and the Navy’s F-18 aircraft; aerothermodynamic flight experiments with the Space Shuttle Columbia & Shuttle payload integration to National Security programs with Intelligence Collection spacecraft with the NRO. He also enjoyed golf, walking on the beach with Nancy and trading in the Stock Market.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2024 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church located at 2400 Mayport Road in Jacksonville, FL with the Reverend William Kelly as Celebrant, followed by a reception in the church's fellowship hall. Bob will be interred at Virginia Tech’s Columbarium with a view of the Duck Pond at a later date.

Memorial donations may be donated to the American Heart Association.
