Richard O. Spelman, 92, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on May 6, 2023. He was born in 1930 in Oak Park, Illinois. He was the youngest of six children. His wife of 63 years, Eileen, predeceased him. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Julia Hewitt, his brother-in-law, George Hewitt and many nieces and nephews.
In his younger years, Richard was an excellent basketball player. He played on town teams as a teenager, and as a forward on the varsity basketball team at Plattsburg State Teachers College in New York. Richard then served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he attended Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam, NY from 1954 to 1958, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. Richard’s career of 33 years was spent with the Travelers Insurance Company. He retired as associate manager of the Casualty-Claims Dept. in the Washington, D.D. office in 1991. After retirement, Richard and his wife, Eileen, moved to Jacksonville in 1996.
Richard was an avid golfer. He served on the Board of Governors at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, VA for six years. As well as golf, he enjoyed playing tennis, skiing, traveling, cruising, crossword puzzles, reading and cribbage.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at the Cypress Village Chapel at 10 am. Interment will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 1:00 pm the same day.
