SCANLAN Richard E. Scanlan, 93, passed away on February 10, 2016. He is survived by his beloved Colene and her loving children and grandchildren, and by his children Ric, Mary Alice, Bill, and Jim, grandchildren Craig, Liza, Kempe, Jeremy, Lee, Evan, and Aidan and great granddaughters Grace and Claire, and extended family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years Jean Ann (Vogel) Scanlan and brothers Raymond and Harry. Dick proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II on the USS Oklahoma City. He went on to work as an electrical engineer for General Electric and was instrumental in designing rocket guidance systems for NASA's Mercury program. He retired to Ponte Vedra Beach and spent many happy years with his second family. Above all a family man, he was a gentle soul of deep faith and conviction. He always thought of others first and was content with the simple pleasures of life. From childhood at Coney Island, through his years in the Navy, summers at Fire Island, retirement to the Jax beaches, visits to National Parks, and most recently at camp on Brantingham Lake, Dick has always been drawn to the water and the natural beauty of the earth. Dick excelled at sports, particularly baseball, swimming, and basketball, and was Captain of his Catholic University basketball squad, which went to the NIT tournament. Mastery of golf eluded him, but he never stopped trying. He lived a full and happy life. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Ponte Vedra Beach on Friday, February 19th at 11:30 A.M. Services under the direction and care of Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home
