Peter Alan Jones, 76, died peacefully on the evening of Sunday, August 1st. Pete was born on February 13, 1945 in Dekalb, Illinois to Paul and Ruth Jones. He was raised in Rochelle, Illinois, and was a Jacksonville Beach, Florida resident for the past 50 years.
After graduating from Monmouth College, Pete was a Communications Officer in the Navy on the USS Kenneth D. Bailey in Mayport, then at the US Naval Communication Station in Morocco. He had a successful 28 year career with Snap-On Tools, retiring as a Government Account Manager where he maintained the ultra-sensitive Kennedy Space Center account and other military accounts in North Florida and South Georgia.
A lifelong Chicago Bears & White Sox fan, Pete loved all things sports. In college, he was known as “the little general” for his strong leadership skills on and off the field despite his towering height at 5’ 6”. He played quarterback for his high school and college football teams and was a successful college golfer and baseball player. In addition, he coached soccer for eleven years and always loved a round of golf with his friends and family.
Pete had a great love for his family, his friends, and his cats. He had a passion for gardening and was known for his homegrown tomatoes. He loved to be of service and help anyone in need, and he touched many lives with his generous spirit, love of life, and sense of humor - he was the life of the party until the end.
He is survived by his three children, Erin Jones, Megan Jones Nyhan and Kyle Jones; his six grandchildren, Carter, Willa, Josephine, Duke, Ellie, Jett; and his friend and advocate, Kim Popovich.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering on Saturday, August 14 at 11AM at Lee Kirkland Cemetery, 2-30 Penman Rd S., and to Mavi Waterfront Bar & Grill afterwards to share a favorite and funny Pete story.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Pete’s memory may be made to the Grace Garden Fund at BEAM or the Humane Society of Jacksonville.
