Mrs. Allen Hall

September 3, 2014 — September 23, 2014

Mrs. Allen Rucker Hall, a well-loved teacher, passed away peacefully on Sept. 3, 2014. She was 89. Allen taught at Mayport, Ponte Vedra/Palm Valley, and several St. Augustine elementary schools. Usually assigned to her favorite class, the first grade, Allen loved "the little ones." Former students often greeted her on the street, telling her how much they loved having her as their teacher.
Allen got her unusual name when her parents, William Harrison Rucker and Meriel (Myrtle) Rucker, convinced they were having a boy, gave their little girl the old family name they had already chosen: Allen Harrison Rucker. A lifetime of receiving men's catalogues, rearranged sleeping compartments, and general confusion ensued. Allen spent her childhood in Richmond, Va. Her family later moved to an oceanfront home in Atlantic Beach, Fla.
Diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 11, Allen was one of the first people to be operated on with modern brain surgery techniques. Despite having this large tumor removed, Allen excelled in school. She attended the University of Richmond where she met her future husband, Lloyd Thomas Hall. After graduation, she embarked on a four-year adventure, teaching the children of American officers stationed in Germany and Japan after World War II. There, Allen indulged her love of travel, exploring Europe and the mountain hot springs of Japan.
When she returned to Florida, Allen continued teaching and attended the University of Florida graduate school, receiving her Master's degree in Education. Allen began dating her first husband, Frederick Eugene (Jack) Williams, when they were in a production of H.M.S. Pinafore. Married in Cockeysville, Md., in 1955, Allen and Jack had two children. They moved to St. Augustine in 1962 and divorced in 1970. Years later, Lloyd Hall and Allen rekindled their college romance, marrying in 1983. They remained very much in love until Lloyd's death in 1997.
Allen is predeceased by her brother, William Harrison Rucker, Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Traylor Rucker, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and two children: Dana Williams of Lake Worth, Fla., and Diana Hamann of Los Angeles, Calif. Since her children stubbornly refused to produce grandchildren, Allen showered affection upon her beloved "Rucker nephews" and their many beautiful children.
A memorial service will be held at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home, 3600 Third St. South, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250, at 1 p.m on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014. All who knew Allen are welcome.
