CAPT Michael Galeese Knollmann USN (ret.), age 67, passed away on January 26, 2021 from bone marrow transplant complications.
The Navy was his life. One of his greatest joys was to earn the position as the first Commanding Officer of USS Decatur DDG 73. After proudly serving in the Navy for over 30 years he moved on to a spectacular job in the Senior Executive Service. There he applied his well-honed skills serving in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for 11 years.
He retired to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida with is loving wife of 38 years, Heather. He is survived by his wife; brothers, Richard (Kathy), Thomas (Barbara); sister, Christine Lafferty (Ed); nieces, Tyler, Michaela; nephew, Alex.
He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Be the Match, bethematch.org. This organization was crucial in locating a bone marrow donor for Michael.
