Mary Wendell
January 13, 1972 — July 30, 2017
After a long, courageous battle with colon cancer, Mary Sandra Wendell passed away Sunday evening, July 30, 2017, surrounded by friends and family.
Mary was born January 13, 1972 in Honolulu, HI, to Capt. Ronald, USN, ret. and Barbara Berning. Raised in a Navy family, she grew up in Hawaii, California, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida. Mary was a graduate of Bishop Kenny High School and the College of William and Mary.
Mary's joy was spending time with friends and family, the beach, and especially attending her son's many sports activities.
Mary is survived by her devoted husband, Billy Wendell; their son, Patrick; her mother, Barbara Berning and her step-father Michael McHugh; her brother Peter Berning and his wife, Tracey and their daughters Peyton and Mallory. She is preceded in death by her father, Ronald Berning.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Vincent's Riverside and Southside hospitals, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Dr. Badarinth and staff at Cancer Specialists of North Florida for their compassionate, excellent care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 5, 2017 in St. Paul’s Catholic Church of Jacksonville Beach, with Father Rafael Lavilla as Celebrant.
