Marion Haynes

Marion Dunlop Haynes passed away peacefully at Vicar's Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida on April 28 with her sons, her daughter and her son-in-law at her side. She was 104. Marion was born on July 7, 1913 in Washington, D.C. to Ruth Green Dunlop and Walter Grafton Dunlop. She is predeceased by her parents and her sister Ruth and brother George.
In 1935 when she was 22, she met the love of her life, J. Marvin "Tex" Haynes. He was a tax lawyer, then working with the accounting firm of Lybrand, Ross Brothers, and Montgomery. He subsequently founded the law firm of Haynes and Miller. They courted at his Virginia farm, later appropriately named Courtland Farm. They were married on January 23, 1936.
Together they had a happy and successful life built around their three children and many friends in Washington D.C. Marion was active in supporting her children's schools, St. Albans and Holton Arms. She was a member of the Junior League of Washington and served on the Board of Lady Visitors at Children's Hospital. They made many friendships, enjoying them at the Sulgrave Club and playing golf at the Chevy Chase Club. After their 40 years of marriage, Tex passed away in December of 1976.
Marion and Tex first visited Ponte Vedra in 1949. In the 1960's they rented the "McIver Cottage" on the beach in Ponte Vedra and bought it in 1967. They joined the Ponte Vedra Club. After her husband's death, she moved to Ponte Vedra in 1977 and remodeled the 1930's "original" beach house as a residence to which her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren repeatedly visited.
Marion became an active parishioner at Ponte Vedra's Christ Episcopal Church. She did the needlepoint cushion for the Bishop's chair, one of the communion kneeling pads and participated in creating the needlepoint rug and communion kneeling pads for the Chapel. In 2012, the Church presented her with the Christ Church Cross as a Distinguished Service Award. Christ Church was central to her life.
In 2006, she became a permanent resident of Vicar's Landing, made many dear friends, played bridge, entertained for TV sports events in her beautiful apartment and went on weekly Saturday lunch outings. She maintained her beach house, preparing it for family visitors, enjoying the ocean view and tending to her flower garden. With the support of her family and three loving caregivers, she led an active life until a few days before her death.
Throughout her life, she devoted herself to her family and friends. Marion was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her large extended family. She lived her life to exacting standards, made friends immediately and genuinely, and recognized the humanity in all she met. She loved life and pursued it with great enthusiasm for over a century. Her friends and family affectionately called her "Mame."
She is survived by her sons, James Marvin Haynes, Jr. (Nancy), Walter Dunlop Haynes; and her daughter, Beverley Haynes Johnson (Stanfield). She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Jane Dunlop Haynes, James Marvin Haynes III (Hollie), both children of previously deceased Jane Weller Haynes, Inslee Haynes Fariss (Anderson); Marshall Adams Haynes (Peggy), Col. Justin Montgomery Haynes (Amy), Mary Lynn Haynes, daughter of the previously deceased Gaye Haynes; Steven Berlin Johnson (Alexa), Sallie Johnson Patel (Manesh), Peter Haynes Johnson (Kendra), Emily Stanfield Himes (Chris); and 20 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Mame will be held at 11:00 AM on July 7, 2018 (her birthday) at Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Interment will be private.
