Margaret “Skippy” Stone Nixon passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Born April 6, 1938 in Greensboro, NC, she was the daughter of Delilah Ruth Williams and Bernice Jordan Stone. Skippy grew up in Rocky Mount, NC. She graduated from Salem College in 1960 with a degree in French.
Margaret began her career in fashion and marketing at Thalhimer's in Richmond, VA before moving to New York City where she worked for the Wool Bureau. In the 1990's, she returned to Rocky Mount and joined Southeastern Advertising as a marketing consultant. In 2000, she married Vaughn Nixon II and in 2014, the couple relocated from Pittsfield, MA to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.
She was a Trustee of the Berkshire Botanical Garden and a member of the Lenox Garden Club, the Pittsfield Country Club and the Lenox Club in the Berkshires and a member of the Sawgrass Country Club and The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club in Ponte Vedra.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Nixon II, in 2023. She is survived by her cousin Jasper "Jack" Cummings of Raleigh, NC; her step-son Matthew Vaughn Nixon and his daughters Asha and Lua Nixon; her step-daughter Elizabeth Nixon Rivière and her husband, Fabien Rivière, and their sons, William and James Rivière.
A private memorial gathering will be held in the Berkshires in June.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in her memory to Berkshire Botanical Garden, P.O. Box 826, Stockbridge MA 01262.
