Martha Lucille Eddy Deckman was born in Frenchtown, NJ on May 10, 1920 and left us on August 14, 2017, one of five children born to Ida Jordan and George Eddy. Lucy played tennis and basketball at Frenchtown High School, and was Captain of her college basketball team at Drexel Institute of Technology where she graduated with a degree in home economics and met her husband “Deck” Deckman.
Lucy and Deck lived in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, raising four children, traveling much of the world, and making many lasting friendships before settling in Ponte Vedra in the early 70’s.
Lucy’s sense of humor, wit, and caring nature were greatly appreciated by her many friends and her family. She was a consummate reader, active volunteer, passionate golfer, avid sports fan, accomplished quilter and needleworker. Her memory will live on for years in the many quilts and needlework pieces found in the homes of family and friends. She and Deck were members of Oak Bridge Country Club where among other accolades she won the Octogenarian Tournament and had a hole in one on a par three, witnessed by her two sons and husband. What a foursome that was! Lucy was always an inspiration to many young and upcoming women golfers.
Lucy was a wonderful wife, mother, grand- and great grandmother, but equally, a wonderful and loyal friend who will be missed by many. She was much loved by son James and his recently deceased wife Sandy, Sequim, WA; daughter Martha and her husband Paul, Greenwood Village, CO; daughter Susan and her husband Robert, Pasadena, CA; son George and his wife Lyn, Jacksonville, FL; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Life Celebration will be held on October 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville Beach. Donations can be made in Lucy’s memory to Community Hospice and Palliative Care, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
