L. Clark McCammon

 Leslie Clark McCammon, a dedicated educator and environmental specialist, passed away on July 28, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on June 27, 1939, in Cromwell, Indiana, where he proudly hailed as always being a HOOSIER!

Clark’s academic journey began at Cromwell High School, graduating in 1957. He went on to pursue his higher education at Indiana University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree. Additionally, he spent two years at University of Montana, where he not only furthered his education but also showcased his baseball skills as a member of the university's baseball team.

Throughout his professional career, Clark made significant contributions in the field of education and environmental studies. He taught high school at Eastern High School in Greene County, Indiana, later becoming an environmental specialist at the Indiana State Board of Health. He served as a professor at Eastern Kentucky University and Western Illinois University furthering the knowledge of many students in the realm of environmental studies. He retired on January 1, 2002, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence and dedication to his students.

Notable achievements during his time at Western Illinois University included coordinating the Health Sciences Department Internship program and developing the department's Internship program field supervisor manual. He also shared his expertise by publishing several articles addressing environmental issues in national and state professional journals.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Clark was known for his vibrant personality and varied interests. He cherished playing pickup basketball, golfing, and exploring new destinations, including a memorable trip to Scotland in 2000. His love for history and coin collecting, as well as his enjoyment of crossword puzzles, added depth to his character. In his youth, he excelled as a shortstop on the 1955 Ligonier, Indiana American Legion baseball team, which reached the elite eight in the state tournament. Additionally, his musical talent shone through as he played the trombone in the high school band.

Clark’s life was enriched by the presence of his family and friends. He is survived by his second wife, Mary Ann Hogan McCammon; son, Craig (Sheri) McCammon; grandsons, Zach (Jessica) McCammon and Evan McCammon; great grandsons, Landon and Max; sister, Annie Holdeman (Roger); nephew, Bryan Holdeman; stepsons, Michael and Sean Hogan; stepdaughters, Colleen Wilhelm and Kelly Hogan; several step grandsons and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned A. and Eleanor J. (nee Clark) McCammon; first wife Dorothy  McCammon; and daughter, Stephanie McCammon.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 10, 2024 in Holy Family Catholic Church, 9880 Baymeadows Rd, Jacksonville, FL.
