Justine Rice Creveling, 79, a Ponte Vedra Beach resident for 33 years, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017. She was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Rice III of Interlaken. Following graduation from Asbury Park High School, Justine attended Glassboro State College, Glassboro, New Jersey, where she was on the Dean’s List, a class officer, and involved in many extra-curricular activities. She completed her degree in Early Childhood Education at Kean College, Elizabeth, New Jersey. Following college, she taught kindergarten and art appreciation in New Jersey.
Justine spent her childhood and early adult years on the Jersey Shore. After marriage and a short time in Towson, Maryland, she and her family moved back to the Jersey Shore. Several years later, the family moved to Malvern, Pennsylvania, then on to Fairfax County, Virginia, before settling in Ponte Vedra Beach. In New Jersey, she was an Ordained Deacon in the Tower Hill Presbyterian Church in Red Bank, where she also was a nursery school teacher and led many youth and membership programs. While in Pennsylvania, she was a member of the Wayne Presbyterian Church and involved in their youth programs, and served on the Paoli Memorial Hospital Association and Mainline Symphony Guild.
In Virginia, she joined the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, where she again was involved in youth programs, and the International Town and Country Club, where she was active in golf and tennis. Justine also served on the Club’s Board of Governors and as Chair of the Membership and House Committees, including volunteer service as interim Club Manager. After moving to Ponte Vedra Beach, she joined Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach, the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, and Sawgrass Country Club. At Sawgrass, Justine served on the House Committee, where she helped guide the decor and furnishings for the new Beach Club.
With an art minor in college, Justine developed a strong interest in interior design. This interest was put to work redecorating and furnishing the clubhouse of International Town and Country Club in Virginia and culminated in establishing the respected and successful Justine Creveling Interiors in 1990, through which she provided a wide range of interior design services for a great many oceanfront and other homes and condos in Ponte Vedra Beach.
She enjoyed cooking and entertaining and had an enviable collection of cookbooks and recipes. Most of all, Justine was a wonderful wife, mom, grandmom, sister, and aunt, and a great friend with a ready smile and always sunny personality. She will be long remembered and missed greatly.
Justine was pre-deceased by her beloved son, James Emerson Creveling. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kenneth H Creveling Jr; her much loved son Kenneth H Creveling III and wife Patricia; and two treasured grandchildren, James “Jimmy” N Creveling and Caroline E Creveling of Jacksonville. She is also survived by her sister, Brenda Prichard; brother-in-law, John Prichard of Wilton, Connecticut; and brother Edward C. Rice IV of Dania, Florida. She also leaves nieces, Laura Prichard, Susan Mastellari, Meredith Jensen, and Kristine Rice; nephews, Edward Rice V and William Rice; grand nieces, Ella Mastellari, Maggie Jensen, and Samantha Consorti; and grand nephews William Jensen, Samuel Mastellari, and M. J. Consorti.
A Memorial Service for Justine will be held at Palms Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville Beach, on Monday, August 28 at 11:00 am. Cremains will be interred at Ponte Vedra Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palms Presbyterian Church
