SAWYER Judy Sawyer, 76, left this world peacefully and gracefully as she lived her life on January 15, 2016. She was gentle and thoughtful to all and judgmental toward none. She loved and nurtured her children Jennifer and Jeffrey and cherished the joy of 4 grandchildren, Carson, Natalie, Zander and Ethen. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 1, 1939 and attended Hillsdale College where she gained numerous academic and leadership honors. She received a scholarship to the University of Michigan for a Masters degree in English and where, Ralph, her husband of 51 years, was fortunate enough to encourage her to marry. After his medical school degree they entered the US Navy, interned at Bethesda Naval Hospital and spent three years in Morocco traveling extensively in Europe, and twice to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Thailand where her patience with hardship was tested in days crossing deserts and frightening dirt road excursions over the Himalayas. They decided to make the Navy a career and after the children entered college she lovingly taught Learning Disabled adults to their good fortune at Montgomery College in Bethesda, Md. In spite of a busy schedule she readily shifted with short notice to hostess for dinners for ophthalmology residents and staff and friends, visitors and family. She is survived by a grateful husband for a beautiful life never imagined, and above children and grandchildren all of whom will miss her always cheerful demeanor, positive attitude and gentle ways. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 28 at the Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home just north of JT Butler on A1A.
