Joyce Sendler

September 11, 1935 — July 20, 2018

Joyce Alexander Sendler, 82, forty-year resident of Neptune Beach, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2018. Joyce, the only child of Jones and Emma Alexander, grew up on a small farm in Huntersville, NC. She was proud of her Stumptown Road roots and cherished her extended family in that area.

In 1956, Joyce graduated from Queen’s College where she was a student government leader as well as a member of Chi Omega. She married Al Sendler in 1956 and they shared 51 years of marriage. After raising a family, they traveled the world. Joyce embraced every adventure.

Joyce loved the Lord! She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Atlantic Beach and Sawgrass Chapel. For many years her Sundays were joyfully filled with attending services at both churches, and she always looked forward to her weekday studies with the ladies bible study groups.

An avid beach walker, Joyce was dedicated to keeping the Neptune Beach shore clean and protecting the sea turtle nests.  Joyce was also an avid bowler and member of the Tuesday Morning Bowling League for 38 years.

Joyce found great joy in her children and grandchildren and they loved their “Granny Joyce!” She will be sadly missed by her loving family: son, David Sendler (Michelle); daughter, Janice Plucknett (Dennis); grandchildren, Lindsey Rinaldo (Lorenzo), Caitlin Spinosa (Zach), Jon Plucknett (Lauren); and great-grandchildren, Aldo and Annabelle Rinaldo. She also leaves behind her dear in-laws:  Edward and Jayne Sendler, Mary Ann and William Newell, Carolyn Sendler, Jean and William Ayers, and Charles and Lynn Sendler as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Al Sendler; parents, Jones and Emma (Knox) Alexander; grandson, Alex Plucknett; and brother-in-law, Richard Sendler.

Joyce will be remembered for her kindness and her love of family, friends, and the Lord. Everyone will miss her cheerful greeting, “Happy to see you.”

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church in Atlantic Beach.

Memorial donations may be made to: Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (Memo: Joyce Sendler), 4500 San Pablo Road South, Jacksonville, FL 32224 or University of Nebraska Foundation (Memo: Alex Plucknett Memorial Scholarship), NU Athletic Office, 625 Stadium Drive, Lincoln, NE 68588
