Josephine Culbertson Marland, 91, died peacefully on April 25, 2017 in Atlantic Beach, Florida. Josephine Culbertson was born in Bucharest, Romania, the daughter of US Ambassador William S. Culbertson and Mary Hunter Culbertson.  She lived for several years of her childhood in Santiago, Chile and remained thereafter fluent in Spanish.  She attended Holton Arms School in Washington, DC and Connecticut College.  She later completed her B.A. at American University in Washington, DC.  She was a talented painter, often inspired by the flowers and trees at her parents’ country home in Charmian, Pennsylvania.  She maintained a lifelong interest in news and politics and continued into her 90s to read the newspaper every day.

She was married in Washington, DC in 1945 to Edmund Pendleton, an international lawyer, with whom she had five daughters.  She was busy raising children but she found time to volunteer with the Junior League and the Girl Scouts.  She was a lifelong member of the National Presbyterian Church.  Her marriage to Edmund Pendleton ended in divorce after 29 years.

She is predeceased by her second husband, Dr. Albert Marland, to whom she was married for 21 years, and by her daughter, Helen Rowe.  She is survived by four daughters, Junia Baker (James), Mary Jo Pendleton, Lucille Pendleton (Hugh Seaton, deceased), and Margaret Humphrey, and by her grandchildren, Edmund Baker (Debra Sivigny), William Beaver, Guy Seaton (Allyson Mullins), Julia Seaton, Clinton Humphrey and Helen Humphrey.
