McCARTHY Joseph E. McCarthy, 97, of Atlantic Beach, Florida, affectionately known as Papa to his loving family passed away Monday, February 29, 2016. McCarthy. He was the second son of the late Joseph and Helen Ray McCarthy. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with AB and LLB degrees in 1941. While in law school, he worked part-time at the law firm of Hurt, Tabor & Celeste and specialized in legal research and the preparing of legal briefs. Following graduation, he was employed by the law firm of Davis & Young handling legal work for the State of Ohio. When war broke out, he was rejected from the Armed Services due to a perforated ear drum and as the war progressed, he worked in the Personnel Department of the General Motors Bomber Plant. At the end of the war his father, mother and sister, Mary moved to Jacksonville, Florida. He joined them in 1948 and began working as Office Manager at A.A.A. During this time he met and married Annie Mary Mulrennan in 1954. After 7 years at A.A.A., he left to join George Washington Health and Accident Company as a Claims Auditor. During the next 35 years he progressed from Auditor to Manager and finally Vice President of Claims Department until his retirement. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio. After moving to Jacksonville, he became Faithful Navigator of the Ponce de Leon Assemble 4th degree Knights of Columbus in 1955. He also served as Grand Knight of Father Murphy Council 5535 in 1966. He has been an active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach for over 50 years. He was a big fan of the New York Yankees Baseball team and the Notre Dame Football team. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of nearly 62 years, Annie Mary and their three children, Catherine Bennett (David), John McCarthy (Kim), and Lisa Joost (Bill), 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was predeceased by his brother John and sisters, Helen and Mary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m., Sat., March 12th in St. Paul's Catholic Church (435 1st Ave. N, Jacksonville Beach, FL), with Rev. William Kelly as Celebrant. Entombment will be held in Beaches Memorial Park of Atlantic Beach, FL.
