John Francis McCoy, 77, passed into eternity peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at the St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center, following an extended illness. Johnny was born July 13, 1938, in Jacksonville, FL, and was the seventh child of William Henry and Thelma Windham McCoy. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, John Francis McCoy, Jr; his brothers, Dr. William Henry McCoy, Jr. and Edward Windham McCoy, Sr. Johnny is survived by his daughter Joy Bukowski, his son-in-law, Jeff Bukowski of St. Augustine, along with their children, Bliss and Naomi; his sisters, Thelma Smith, Jacksonville Beach; Patsy Ashey, Richmond, VA; Ann Wooten, Jacksonville Beach; and Martha Burgess, Tampa; a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Johnny’s faith journey began at the old Assumption Catholic School where he spent time before and after school engaging in sports activities, altar boy duties, and playground fun with friends who accompanied him to Bishop Kenny High School and maintained their friendships throughout his life. After graduating Bishop Kenny, Johnny enlisted in the Florida Air National Guard. He joined Central Truck Lines in Jacksonville and became transportation manager. Johnny later enjoyed a long career in real estate including teaching real estate classes throughout Florida. Johnny revitalized his faith with Cursillo and enriched and deepened it with a pilgrimage to Medjugore, Rome, and attendance at a Papal Mass. He was particularly proud of his activism with the Right to Life movement, especially his support of women facing crisis pregnancies.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Edward Murphy at Assumption Catholic Church, Atlantic Blvd., 32207 at 2:00 PM, Monday June 13, with burial following at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd.
Visitation and Rosary will be held Sunday evening, June 12, from 5-7 at Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home at 3600 3rd St. S. Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
