Jane Gibson, 89, died July 26, 2018 after a long, courageous battle with COPD. She was born in Montclair New Jersey, the daughter of the late John Edward and Dorothy McKercher Maynard. Her husband of 18 years, Jack W. Gibson passed away earlier this year. Jane is survived by her daughters Susan Cutting Wade (Jim), Anne Cutting Gearhart (Bruce), and Betsy Baker Plum; son Peter Sherwood Gilbert (Marian); and 9 grandchildren: Maggie Wade, Charles Gearhart, Rufus Gearhart, Alex Plum, Lindsay Plum, Sarah Gilbert, Matthew Gilbert, Alex Gilbert and Sean Gilbert; stepchildren, Paul Jones Gilbert (Mary), Sally Munson (Doug) Christine Gilbert and their children. Jane was predeceased in death by her husband Paul Jones Gilbert after 49 years of marriage and her sister Margery Woods.
Jane attended Montclair New Jersey schools and Colby Junior College in New London New Hampshire. After graduation she worked for McCalls Magazine in New York City until she was married. Jane was what one would call a stay at home mother, but she put in thousands of hours volunteering at Valley Hospital, Bergen Pines County Hospital, numerous fundraisers, school libraries, Girl Scouts, Church Boards and committees at St. Peter’s Church and Christ Church. An avid tennis player, golfer and bridge player. She loved staying involved in her communities. Loving all and loving life, each day was a blessing to her. Throughout the years Jane belonged to Ridgewood Country Club, The Upper Ridgewood Tennis Club, Sawgrass Country Club, The Ponte Vedra Country Club, BSF, The Junior League and Christ Church.
For their caring and compassion, there are no words to describe the gratitude the family expresses to the staff at The Stratford.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2018. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville Florida 32257.
There’s a place that I
travel when I want to roam
And nobody knows
but me –
Roads don’t go there and
signs don’t tell
And nobody knows
but me -
It’s way, way afar and
far, far away
over the mountains and sea
And wherever I’m going
Is where I am
And nobody knows but me
