H K (Herman) Usher, 74 passed away early Tuesday morning, November 16, 2021 at his home. He was born July 13, 1947 in Monroe, N C and raised on the family dairy farm outside of Lancaster, S C. His parents were Robert E. Usher and Louise H. Usher of Robert Usher Road. He moved to the Beaches in the mid 80’s with his wife and daughter.
He and his wife managed the Mayport Auto and Mini Storage (now U-Haul on Mayport Road) while he also hauled Sherrod custom vans from St. Augustine Rd. to dealers up and down the eastern coast. When hurricane Andrew hit Miami, he took 2 truckloads of workers with chain saws immediately to help clear roads and remained helping to rebuild the hard-hit Homestead area. After returning to the beaches, he became the heart pine man, buying loads of wood from mills being torn down, re-milling and both selling and guiding others to install the antique heart pine wood into homes from Fernandina to Ponte Vedra with occasional other places like Coral Cables to Georgia. He never cut a living tree to produce the wood, it was all reclaimed. He leaves the family well versed in the business. Public places with his wood are the Salt Life restaurants, Surfer the Bar, Culhane’s Irish Pub and the sanctuary at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on 8th St.
H K is survived by his wife of 46 years, Annabelle; daughter Amber (Tim ) and grandson, Timothy Robert Taylor and a sister, Kathy Cato of Charleston, SC. His only brother passed on earlier this year.
Graveside services and viewing will be held at 2:30 Monday November, 22 at Beaches Memorial Park, 1500 Main St. and Levy Road, Atlantic Beach, Florida. Pastor Brones of Bethlehem Lutheran Church will conduct the service.
