Hazel Harmon Brown, a longtime resident of Atlantic Beach, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 5, 2017. Born on January 16, 1932, to the late Linda Yelton Harmon and Curtis Crawford Harmon, Hazel graduated from Greenwood (SC) High School and attended Powers School in Washington, D.C. She was a legal secretary. She and her husband, Howard, moved to the beaches in 1973, and in 1975, Hazel became administrative assistant to the late J.T. McCormick of Jacksonville Beach.
Hazel received her diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia on April 5, 2016. Doctors advised she had two months to live and she was placed under Hospice care. Hazel and Howard moved to Beach House on April 27 from their home of 41 years in Atlantic Beach. God had other plans, and Hazel lived an additional eight months. She had survived three other cancers since 1989.
A member of Neptune Baptist Church, Neptune Beach, Florida, since 1973, Hazel had served faithfully in many ministries of the church.
Hazel is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Howard S. Brown; brothers, Clyde (Ruth) Harmon and Jim (Jean) Harmon of Greenwood, SC; nieces, Jan H. Stroud of Simpsonville, SC, Gay H. Marshall and Vicky H. Collins of Greenwood, SC; nephews, Curt Harmon of Greenwood, SC, Elbert Harmon of Stanley, NC, and John (Vickie) Harmon, of Hernando, MS; and great-nephew, Parker H. Stroud of Simpsonville, SC. She was predeceased by her sister and a brother.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 9th at Neptune Baptist Church, 407 Third St., Neptune Beach, FL, with Reverend Dr. Tom Bary officiating. Private Interment will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
