George Mente

September 8, 1925 — October 19, 2015

Retired Captain, George G. Mente, 90, passed away on Oct. 19, 2015, at Loving Care Living Facility of St. Augustine with his sweetheart and wife of 25 years, Valle Mente, by his side.
George was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sept. 8, 1925, to parents Anna and Frank Mente. George grew up in the Jacksonville and Palm Valley areas.
Immediately after graduating from Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach at 17 years old, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and started a long career and love of the sea.
After his service to his country, he became First Mate and then Captain for the ship, America Explorer, sailing around the world three times over during his career.
Always with a twinkle in the eye and a unique view of the world, George's seafaring tales entertained and educated friends and family many times over the years.
George will be missed, but fond memories and the images and stories he shared will always be cherished by his family and friends.
A celebration of George's life will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, in the Chapel of Quinn Shalz Funeral Home, 3600 Third Street, Jacksonville Beach.
