Garland Longhouser, Jr.

Garland A. Longhouser Jr., Captain, United States Marine Corps Retired, has received his final permanent Change of Station Orders effective September 18, 2017.  Born to Margaret A. (Wernz) Longhouser and father Garland A. Longhouser Sr., both deceased, in Chicago, Illinois 1931.  Married (57years) to Marjorie E. (Wilson) Longhouser of Washington D.C., a Son Garland A. Longhouser III of Jacksonville, Florida, both deceased. Attended Lindblom Technical High School.   Entered the Marine Corps in 1949.  Served in Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Military Police (Body Guard for 1st Marine Division Commanding General’s) Photo Reconnaissance Squadron (VMJ 3), Marine Attack Squadron (VMA 331), Infantry, Combat Service, Engineers, Force Artillery and various Headquarters Units in Operations.  Taught at special weapons schools, Commanded Nuclear Weapons Storage and Maintenance Site’s and was an alternate member of the National Nuclear Emergency Survey Team (NEST).  Participated in several above ground nuclear device tests, significantly the largest by yield device and the only device recognized as a misfire, among others.  Enlisted as a Private holding every enlisted rank through Master Sergeant, Warrant and Commissioned Warrant Officer through Captain.  His last active duty assignment as Nuclear Safety Officer, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific.  Retired from the Marine Corps in 1972.  Joined the utility industry at Florida Power and Light Companies Turkey Point Nuclear Plant’s, moving to the St. Lucie Plants in 1976.  Involved in four Start-up operations and three Security System retrofits.  Is credited with the design and implementation of the modern-day security systems.  Retired in 1987.  Joined Florida Progress at its Crystal River Nuclear Plant that same year.  Retired in 1998, after positions in Security, Project Management and Quality Programs.  A Senior Member Emeritus of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, Mbr. American National Standards Safeguards Committee, Mbr, American Society of Industrial Security.  The author of two DOD staff studies involving nuclear weapons logistics and two published articles by Securitas (Europe) covering security system design and underwater intrusion detection.  Mbr. Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and past two term President of the Treasure Coast Chapter, Military Officers Association of America.  Life Mbr. Florida Sheriffs Association.

Survived by daughters Deborah A. Doran of Arvada, Colorado and Dawn M. Flannery of Bonsal, California; two sons, John S. Longhouser of Pahrump, Nevada and Eric R. Longhouser of Jacksonville, Florida; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
