Fred Harlan King, 83, of Neptune Beach went to be with his maker on April 11, 2016. He was born in Detroit, MI on June 8, 1932. He grew up in Great Neck, NY and moved to Florida around 1952. Before moving to Florida, he attended college, was a volunteer fireman and served for a short time in the Army National Guard. He was also a part of the NY Yankees farm team in the early ‘50’s.
Fred, an engineer with Southern Bell Telephone Company, moved to Neptune Beach in 1977 with his wife and two boys and retired in 1991 after 35 years with Southern Bell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Janey; sons, Richard (Nannette) Robbins, Michael (Sandra) Robbins; daughter, Kathleen King; sister Doris Cotton; 6 grandchildren: Geoffrey Robbins, Rachel Robbins, Joshua Robbins, Abbey Robbins, Jacob Robbins and Shawn King. He was predeceased by his son, Arthur King.
Fred was very active in community service with the Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club, reading with Beaches Elementary students, Players By the Sea; and serving his church through coaching softball and building projects. He loved pets and would often be seen walking his dog, “Cupie” in the park.
Services will be held at Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 Third Street South in Jacksonville Beach at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016. Because of Fred’s passion to help the youth of the community, donations to the Beaches Boys and Girls Club, 820 20th Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach, Fl 32250 and /or donate a book to one of the Beaches elementary schools would be preferred in lieu of flowers.
