Ethel Stanton

Ethel Myers Stanton passed away on April 2, 2018 at home with her family. She was born in Auburn, NY on June 13, 1929 and grew up in Spencerport, NY. She received her degree from Pasadena College, Syracuse University and a masters at University of North Florida for teaching in gifted English classes.  She began her teaching career in 1958 at Atlantic Beach Elementary under the principal,  Mrs. Chambers, as a second grade teacher and continued at Fletcher Junior High School and later Mayport Middle School where she retired after a 35 year career.   She continued at Fletcher Middle School in the reading classes as a part-time volunteer and was named Volunteer of the Year. She was passionate about her reading, genealogy and family. She traveled to gather information to fill in all the family members history and told their stories through her writing. She volunteered as part of the children’s international villages when traveling with middle school students learning about different cultures and how communication among cultures of other countries improves humanity. She is remembered by many of her former students, friends and participants in her many travels for her caring and acceptance.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Davis “Red” Stanton, whom she met through her uncle, Carl Thoren, when joining him in Puerto Rico after graduating from Pasadena. Her family attended a beautiful wedding in San Juan. There she joined in ensembles playing the flute and piano. Red Stanton was later transferred to Jacksonville, FL in 1954. They made their first home in Jacksonville Beach and raised 4 children who survived her, Patricia Reineking, Brenda Hennessey, Nell Grimm and John Stanton. She is also survived by her sons-in-law, Bill Reineking, Dwayne Grimm and daughter-in-law, Jody Stanton.  She watched over 7 grandchildren: Amanda Hennessey, Kristen Huth, James Hennessey, Ginger Grimm, Krista Grimm, along with Will and John Reineking who preceded her in death; 4 great grandchildren: Kali and Ethan Blair, Finn and Romy Huth. She is also survived by her brother, Welton Myers and many nieces and nephews all over the world.

She accepted everyone as if they were part of the family homestead and were adopted members. She was always eloquent in discussions and never complained about anything.  She  was like a second mom to many.

A Memorial Service will be held April 14, 2018 at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach at 11 AM. An additional service will be held at the gravesite on July 5, 2018 in Syracuse, NY where she will be laid to rest with her parents and sister. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Jacksonville Beach Public Library where she volunteered hours for students of foreign languages to learn readings, read and join in a book club.
