Elizabeth Ann McNally Gorman, known to all as “Betty,” passed away on June 1, 2018 at the age of 83 after a long battle with dementia. Betty shared 59 years of marriage with her best friend and husband, Ken. They had four children: Steve of Dothan, AL; Ken of Fanwood, NJ; Jeannine of Clinton Township, NJ; and Susan of Chatham, NJ; and nine grandchildren: Paul, Kelsey, Elizabeth, Daniel, Samantha, Maria, Teresa, Katie, and Sarah.
Betty was born in the Bronx, NY to Danny and Annie McNally who immigrated from Scotland. She attended Villa Maria Academy and Hunter College majoring in Education. She was an admired teacher in the Bronx before moving to South Plainfield, NJ in 1962 where she devoted her life to being a loving wife and mother. She volunteered in her children’s schools, produced summer drama workshops, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and spent many summer days driving a carload of kids to the Jersey Shore. Also, she was very active at Sacred Heart Parish and served in various roles, including Pre-Cana. Her talents included sewing, creating afghans and quilts, and playing the piano. Once her children were teenagers, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse and cared for patients at Perth Amboy General Hospital. She and Ken moved to Morristown in 1986 where Betty enjoyed volunteer work at Morristown Medical Center. In addition to spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren, she loved the beach, traveling, entertaining, and playing golf. They relocated to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL following Ken’s retirement in 1997.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Ponte Vedra Beach at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Betty’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association of America. www.alz.org.
