Eleanor Frances Corbett (Potts), 88, of Jacksonville, FL, was welcomed into Heaven on January 24, 2025. She was born in Whitmire, SC, and was the oldest of three children born to William and Sara Potts (Adams). Jacksonville has been home since 2003.
A 1958 graduate of Winthrop College, Eleanor began her career as a life-long educator. She married her high school sweetheart and Naval aviator, Robert Larry Corbett, that same year. Eleanor loved an adventure and moved with Larry throughout his Naval career. Along the way, she easily found teaching positions to further her experience as an educator. In the 1960’s she traveled throughout Europe with other Navy wives to meet Larry at numerous ports of call.
Eleanor dreamed of becoming a teacher from childhood. She earned her master’s degree while teaching and raising her family. Eleanor was devoted to her students and was the first teacher to serve the Teenage Parent Program for Martin County Public Schools. The program was designed to continue the education of teenage girls who were pregnant or new mothers.
Eleanor’s greatest joy was her family and her faith providing endless love and quiet strength. She had the optimistic belief in her students, friends and most importantly family, that they could achieve anything they set their hearts and minds to. We will forever remember her pops of red, “too many” sewing machines, reams of fabric, family meals on wheels, VBS, and her ability to remember details that no one else was able to recall.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Larry; daughter Lisa Hayes, and her husband Mike whom she loved as her own; grandchildren, Meghunn, Taylor, Austin and Madison.
Inurnment will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 9:30am on Friday, February 7, 2025, with a Memorial Service to be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1423 8th Avenue N, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
