Douglas “Doug” Warren McNeill, 75, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida died Saturday, March 17th, 2018 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Doug was born December 26, 1942 in Canton, Ohio and graduated from Kent State University with a BA in Architecture. After graduation, he served in the US Army Reserves as a medic.
Doug enjoyed a long and successful career in the real estate industry. He retired as President of Case Pomeroy Properties (New York, Ponte Vedra Beach), a real estate development and investment firm which focused on retail shopping centers, office and apartments. Previously he had been a Senior Vice President of Fairfield Communities (Jacksonville) and President of Real Estate for Collier Enterprises (Naples). He was a member of The Plantation Golf and Country Club and the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club.
Doug served as past President of the Association of Florida Community Developers; a full member of the Urban Land Institute; a past Director of the Kent State University Foundation; a past Director of Leadership Florida; a past Director of the Florida Chamber of Commerce Management Board; and a past member of the University of North Florida Foundation Board.
Doug and his wife Sandra moved to Florida in 1968 after graduating from University. After time in Ft Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Jacksonville and Naples, he and his family moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1994.
His greatest loves were his family and his work. He took great joy and satisfaction in mentoring and helping shape the careers of young professionals. In retirement, Doug liked to keep in touch with his old colleagues, sending them relevant and interesting articles and dropping in to say hello. He also cherished lunch with his buddies.
Doug is predeceased by his father and mother, Eugene and Mildred McNeill of Canton, Ohio; his sister Linda; and brother Larry Allen McNeill of Arlington, Texas.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sandra Allenby McNeill; two children Jeffrey (Betsy) of Ponte Vedra Beach and Amy Gemmill (Guy) of Stevenson, Maryland; his brother Tom McNeill of Massillon, Ohio; and six beloved grandchildren, Charlotte, Murphy, Dixon McNeill and Cameron, Blythe, Finley Gemmill.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Doug’s honor at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jacksonville Humane Society, the University of North Florida Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
