Dorothy J. Schechterle

Dorothy Schechterle passed away July 5, 2022, at the age of 75. She was born June 16, 1947, in Asbury Park, NJ to Edward and Regina Mikilitus. She grew up at the Jersey shore, spent many years in Atlanta, and moved to Atlantic Beach in 1995.

She attended Glassboro State College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. She married Brian, her childhood sweetheart, on August 23, 1969. She taught elementary school for several years before becoming a mother, the job she excelled at most of all. She volunteered at her church, her children’s and grandchildren’s schools and many other organizations. She was a talented artist, and she especially loved sharing her creativity with her grandchildren. She was a life-long learner and avid hobbyist. She took art trips to Italy and China and traveled to Costa Rica to study Qigong. She loved to walk the beach, often carrying a bag to collect beach treasures or pick up trash. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents and her brother James (Kathi). She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Brian; her brother Edward (Rose) Mikilitus; her sons, Brian (Jannan Thomas) and Peter (Becky); her daughter, Kathleen (L.E.) Hutton; and her grandchildren, Lauren, Eliza, Talbot and Jack.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 12 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
