Doris Wangerin

February 7, 1921 — January 13, 2017

Doris Wolff Wangerin passes peacefully on Jan 13, 2017 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Doris was born Feb. 7, 1921 in Florence, SC, and graduated in 1942 from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, with a degree in Mathematics. She was recruited by the Department of Defense and upon graduation Doris was employed by the Ballistic Research Lab, Aberdeen, MD. She worked for Dr. Edwin Hubble, starting out as an Assistant Computer, progressing to a Computer, then Mathematician, part of the “Top Secret Rosie” program computing bombing tables for the war effort. In August of 1947, Doris and two girlfriends embarked on a 2-month cross country driving adventure including visits to Vancouver, BC and Mexico. She married Clarence Jay Wangerin in 1948, they moved to Silver Spring, MD, in 1957. She worked at a transportation consulting firm until securing a Federal position at CSA as a computer programmer, later a Computer Analyst at GSA. When she retired in 1985, Doris resumed her journeys, taking numerous trips traversing the globe.

Doris was an active member of Marvin Memorial United Methodist Church and served as the treasurer of Burnt Mills Community Assc for over 10 years. Doris regularly volunteered at the Shepherd’s Table in Silver Spring. An avid Redskins fan, too nervous to watch first 15 minutes of each game. She was an exceptional woman who looked out for her family, friends and community and was always there for anyone who needed help. A lifelong democrat, devastated she wouldn’t live to see a woman elected president.

She is survived by two daughters, Pamela Leupen married to Bob of Indian Head, MD, and Deborah Castor married to Anthony of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.  She has two granddaughters, Lauren Akai and Morgan Hart, and two great grandchildren, Makoto Akai and Ryann Hart.

In memory of Doris, send donations to the Shepherd’s Table, Attn: Jacki Coyle, 8106 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910 or to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
