Delmar (Del) Leftwich, 84, was called home by Jesus and returned to his heavenly father on December 29, 2016. He was born on August 4, 1932 in Wise County Virginia. Raised by his maternal grandparents, Del grew up in the coal country of Kentucky and Virginia and attended high school in Tazewell, Virginia.
Del proudly volunteered and served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his time in the Army Del relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida and became a journeyman plumber with the Veterans Administration. He transferred to the Department of the Navy and went on to serve the in the Department of Defense for 36 years, retiring in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Del was a member of the American Legion for 50 years, but his true love was the time he spent with his family. He coached his sons baseball teams, was a Boy Scout leader, untied countess crossed fishing lines and ensured his only granddaughter learned to swim.
Del is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Barbara; sons David (Wendy) and Jeff (Sylvia); granddaughter Kayla; great granddaughter Isabella; and great grandson Julian (born January 2, 2017). He was predeceased by his youngest son Timothy.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 5, 2017 in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home of Jacksonville Beach. His body will be laid to rest in the Jacksonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.
