Daniel Guy Whitehead, 72, passed away after a brief illness with cancer on May 9, 2016. Born September 20, 1943 and grew up in Atlanta, GA. Son of Doris P. Whitehead and the late Joseph Whitehead. Dan's quick wit and generous nature enhanced the lives of all who knew him. He is predeceased by his brother Joe Whitehead and his sister Karen Couch. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Janet Stoner Whitehead, mother Doris Whitehead, sisters-in-laws, brother-in-law, several nieces and nephews.
Graduated with an MHA from Georgia State. Awarded most outstanding US Marine Recruit of his platoon in 1965. He was a Professor and advisor at Florida Community College and University of North Florida. After retiring he taught as a substitute teacher for Duval County Schools.
Dan enjoyed cooking with Janet, creating new recipes and was especially tickled for his publication in Southern Living. Some knew him as Sophie's Dad, he was the fellow walking the miniature dachshund each day. Many happy hours were spent fishing with his buddy, Al Marks. His greatest catch was a 100 pound tarpon in the Keys. He was dubbed by Al as "Barracuda Dan".
Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday, May 13th at Quinn-Shalz, 3600 Third Street South, Jacksonville, Beach. The Memorial Service will be at 10 am Saturday, May 14th in the Chapel of Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home.
