Conrad Frederick Ahrens, 90, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL passed away June 14, 2017. He was born January 23, 1927 and was the son of Elizabeth and Frederick Ahrens. He grew up on Long Island and graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1944. A week later he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre. After his service, he attended Syracuse University where he played Lacrosse and was a member of Delta Upsilon. Conrad was Cadet Commander for the ROTC unit and entered the Air Force in 1951. After he graduated from flight school he joined the 74th Fighter Squadron and served in Maine and Thule Greenland. After completing his service, he was accepted into the management training program at the First National City Bank of New York. He obtained his law degree from New York University in June 1959. After serving in many positions at Citibank both here and abroad Mr. Ahrens retired as a Senior Vice President in 1979. He immediately was named President of the Depository Trust Company of New York and served until 1992. Conrad was a trustee of Elfun Trusts, a director of Cologne Life Re Company and Cologne Re Company of America and was a trustee of Syracuse University.
Since retirement he has lived in Ponte Vedra Beach with his deeply beloved wife, Sandra; the couple traveled the world on many cruises and enjoyed hiking, vacations in North Carolina where they had a summer home in Cashiers. They enjoyed golf and croquet, plus shooting clays. He was a member of Wade Hampton Golf Club, the Chattooga Club, the Plantation Club, Ponte Vedra Inn and Club, the Ponte Vedra Croquet Club and the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York.
Along with his wife Sandra of 27 years, Conrad is survived by his sister, Matt Trope; nephews Jamie Trope and John Ahrens; nieces, Suzanne Gulledge and Cindy Trope. He is predeceased by his brother, Peter Trope.
The family is very grateful to his wonderful caregivers from Brooks Rehab and Community Hospice.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 22 at Palms Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palms Presbyterian Church or Community Hospice of NE Florida.
