Claire Medley Wing West

Claire Medley West (nee Wing), 91, of Ponte Vedra Beach, passed away Nov. 6, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late Claire and Norman Shepherd Wing on March 28, 1931, in Mobile, Alabama. She was predeceased by her husband, James Earl West, sister Lillian Wing Young and her brother Norman Shepherd Wing.

She is survived by her five children, Cindy Chapman of Atlanta, Melinda Hudgins (Jim) of Ft. Worth, Tx., David West (Glenna) of Arlington, TX, John West (Lillie) of Arlington, TX, and Mark West (Priscilla) of Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren Elizabeth Chapman Rowan of Atlanta, Blake Chapman (Brittany) of Canton, GA, and Gray Chapman (Dane Sponberg) of Atlanta; Jamie Hudgins Aldred (Carlton) of St. Augustine, FL, Kate Peugh (Matt) of Germantown, TN, Amanda West of Murfreesboro, TN, Matt West (Paige) of Memphis, TN, Brynne West (Rachel) of Dallas, TX, and John West, Jr. (Rae) of Ft. Worth, TX and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Following her marriage on December 16,1952 to her beloved Jimmy and his military service in Korea in 1953, they relocated to Auburn, AL where he completed his pharmacy degree. After settling in Mobile for fifteen years, they embarked upon a wonderful adventure living in many locations across the south with their five children. Claire had a passion for service as a volunteer with the America Heart Association, UAB Hospital, and the Mayo Clinic. They enjoyed extensive travels around the world and many joyful hours with their children and grandchildren.

They settled in Ponte Vedra Beach upon their retirement and celebrated 58 happy years together modeling a loving marriage and doting upon their large family. Claire was a devoted and loving wife and mother who was regarded as a beautiful blend of a southern belle and a steel magnolia by those who knew and loved her.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers Joann, Solomy, Herlett, Charita, Deborah and Sally. They have treated “Miss Claire” with love, dignity, and respect for the past six years.

Services will be held Friday Nov. 18, 2022, at 11:00am, Our Lady Star of the Sea, 545 A1A N #545, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082. A celebration of her life will follow at The Plantation Beach Club.
