Charlie Calhoun, 80, passed away on September 16, 2023, after suffering a stroke. He was born in Macon, GA on November 21, 1942, and lived in Tallahassee, Columbia, SC, Miami and Ponte Vedra Beach.
Charlie attended Florida State University where he captained the football team in 1963-64. He was president of Phi Delta Theta and was active in ODK, Gold Key Honorary, Beta Alpha Psi and Honor Court. He successfully completed Marine Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA. In 1964, he married Fran and moved to Canada to play football in the CFL before returning to FSU for his Masters & PhD in Accounting.
He then moved the family to Columbia, SC for a teaching position at USC, before accepting Chairmanship of the Accounting Department at University of Miami. During the summers, Charlie taught at Northeastern University in Boston and University of London. He later worked for Price Waterhouse, before concluding his career at University of North Florida, where he was Chairman of the Accounting & Finance Department. Over the course of many years, Charlie chaired professional accounting associations, including NASBA, IFAC, IQAB & IAESB.
Charlie enjoyed lifelong friendships in the “Big Chill” group, as well as at Rivera CC in Miami & Sawgrass CC in Ponte Vedra Beach. He was a devoted FSU booster, and he enjoyed traveling, having new experiences & spending time with friends around the world. Charlie was a loyal, generous & fun loving friend, father, grandfather & husband.
He is survived by Fran, his wife of nearly 60 years, children Josie & Doug, grandchildren Katie & James Duncan and siblings Judy (Dick) Alstrom, Rick Calhoun & Randy (Jennifer) Calhoun.
