Carolyn Tonya Moore passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father April 5, 2017 at Cypress Village in Jacksonville. “TONY”, as she was known by her family and those who knew and loved her was born in Kingsport, Tenn. to Rudy and Ann Moore Feb 2, 1935. In 1942 the family relocated to Jacksonville where she attended elementary school, John Gorrie Jr High and graduated from Robert E. Lee in 1953. She obtained her degree in Education from Florida State University where she was a member of F-Club (Womens Intramural Sports), Tarpon Club, and remained a life-long supporter of The Seminole Boosters and FSU Alumni Association. She later obtained her Master of Education from the University of Florida. During her teaching career, she taught at her alma mater, John Gorrie, in Haverstraw, N.Y. and the majority of her career at Arlington Jr High in Jacksonville.
Tony was a fierce advocate for young people and dedicated to making a positive influence on them. She was active in scouting including Camp Fire Girls and the Mariners. She enjoyed summers as Waterfront Director at Camp Kearsarge in New Hampshire. Her dedication to the teaching profession and to the health and well-being of young athletes brought her many accolades over the years. She served as State President of the Florida Assoc. of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation 1971-1972, and received an “Outstanding Young Educator” award. Her most treasured reward was being instrumental in sending her younger sister to college and seeing her graduate.
Tony is survived by two loving sisters; Barbara (Babs) Phillips and Pamela Moore Cross (Tom), and almost “brother”, Harold Estep (Lola)of San Antonio, Texas; nephews, John M Phillips, Clayton Cross and nieces Stacee Davis and Emily Ann Cross, many dear cousins and a HOST of life-long friends. She is pre-deceased by her parents J.O. (Rudy) and Ann Moore and brother-in-law John M Phillips.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Quinn-Shalz,3600 Third Street South, Jacksonville Beach.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Seminole Boosters, Inc, attn: Gift Processing, P.O. Box 1353, Tallahassee FL 32303. Include in a memo line: IN MEMORY OF TONY MOORE/ Tony Moore Tribute or Community Hospice (Beaches Team) that provided her kindness and care and to her family much needed support during her lengthy illness .
