Captain Maylon Scott, USN (RET)

Captain Maylon Truxtun Scott, USN (RET), 96 years old, died May 24, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center, Jacksonville, Florida following a sudden illness. His residence was at Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Florida. Maylon was born February 2,1921 in Corvallis, Oregon son of Colonel Maylon Edward Scott, US ARMY, and Stephanie Strain Scott. He traveled with his parents to many different bases including Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii where he became an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed foxhunts, horse jumping, and was a member of the Olympic Equestrian team.

He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1943 with the class of 1944. While there he was player on the varsity soccer team.

Upon graduation, he served on the USS Hull (DD886) during World War II.  After World War II, Maylon continued his long and distinguished navy career in the United States and overseas. He served as Commanding Officer on the Newport, Rhode Island based destroyers USS Otterstetter (DER 244) and USS Mitscher (DL 2).  He was the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the USS Biddle (DLG 34). The Biddle received the Secretary of the Navy's Meritorious Unit Commendation for combat operations and completed an Around the World Cruise. Later after an obligatory DC tour as Director of Navy Enlisted Personnel BuPers, he was stationed in Olso, Norway as Chief Naval Section Joint Military Mission to Norway. He graduated from the Naval War College, Newport, RI and George Washington University with a Master’s Degree in International Relations. Among his many military honors Maylon was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with combat “V” for his Vietnam service and the Legion of Merit.

On March 6,1946, he married Betty Wilson Chambliss in Akron, Ohio. They raised their three children for many of their years in Newport, R.I. and Virginia and then moved to Eastman in Grantham, N.H. in 1978 residing in their beloved North Country home, ”GloriBe” until 2002.

Maylon was a member of the vestry at St. George’s and Trinity Episcopal Churches in Newport, R.I. He was a life member of the Army/Navy Country Club and a member at the Newport Country Club where he played at least one round of golf for 55 consecutive years.  Upon his retirement, Maylon was the Development Director for Save the Bay (R.I.) and a Charter Member, Board of Director and CEO for The Seaport 76 Foundation which built the Sloop Providence. He was a certified Cross-country instructor, avid golfer, long time member of the Washingtonians Ski Club and recipient of the NH 48 4,000 Footers Hiking Achievement Patch.

After his wife, Betty of 60 years passed away in 2006, Maylon married Marilyn Worden Willis on February 28, 2007 at Atlantic Beach, FL where they resided for 10 years in the loving community of Fleet Landing.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, a son, Turner Chambliss Scott of Newport, RI, daughters, Carol Leigh Roelker of Cincinnati, OH and Susan Scott Martin of Woodbury, VT, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, a brother, Jackson E. Scott, of Chandler, AZ and sister, Sylvia Ann Bedingfield, of Greeley, CO.

A service at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
