Calvin Morton, 90, a native of Bloomfield, NJ, passed away December 16, 2016. He earned a BA from Rutgers University in 1949 and was also a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. He received his MA in History from NYU in 1950. During WWII, he served in the US Navy and participated in the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll as a member of the Electronic Measurements Team. During the Korean War, he held a commission in the Naval Reserve.
Mr. Morton was affiliated with the Prudential Insurance Company for 36 years and retired as a Director of Marketing in 1986. Two years later he became a Professor of History in the Program Afloat for College Education (PACE) sponsored by the US Navy and served in that capacity over a period of 10 years. He also held adjunct teaching positions with UNF and FCCJ.
He was co-founder and past chairman of the Southern Employee Benefits Conference and past Chairman of the Churchmen in Ponte Vedra. He was a member of Palms Presbyterian Church, The Ponte Vedra Club, and the Seneca Society. He also volunteered for the Mayo Clinic Help Desk logging in 5000 hours over 20+ years.
Cal was preceded in death by his grandson, Tyler Day. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan; son LTC (Ret) Cal Morton Jr. and his wife Jeanne; daughters Lee Ann Day and Carol Jeory; as well as 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Palms Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM on Jan. 13, 2017 followed by interment at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
