2nd Lt. Alfred John Hamwey passed away on Jan. 20, 1945 in the vicinity of Cape Wom, Territory of New Guinea. He was the Pilot of a US Army Air, Douglas A-20G Havoc on a mission.
Alfred was born in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. Alfred enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on September 12, 1940 and proudly served his country during WWII as a pilot.
Alfred was predeceased by his father Frank Abraham Hamwey. His mother, Katherine Cecelia Hamwey, passed a year after Alfred’s loss. His siblings were, Leon Alex Hamwey, Retired Captain with 35 years at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and retired from FANG as a Chief Master Sargent and his brother Frank Hamwey. Leon missed and thought about Alfred often and asked his girls before he passed to never forget Al.
Alfred is survived by his two nieces Kathryn Hamwey Driggers (Wayne) and Peggy Hamwey Wilford, his half nephew Frank Hamwey, retired Lt. from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and half niece Linda Hamwey Shoemaker along with many great nieces and nephews.
A graveside committal will be held at 2:30 on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Jacksonville National Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to DAV or Children of Fallen Patriots.
The family would like to express their thanks to the Army for never giving up on Alfred and now bringing him home.
