Dewey Alvin Cash “Al” was born on March 6, 1936, in the mountains outside of Lynchburg, Virginia, to Leavia Fauber and Luke Cash. The Blue Ridge Mountains forever held a special place in his heart.
Al attended E.C. Glass High School, where he met the love of his life, Charlotte Wolfe. They were named the “Cutest Couple” at E. C. Glass. Al was a multi-sport athlete. He graduated from Greenbriar Military Academy in 1955 and was admitted to the University of Virginia on a full football scholarship, the first in his family to attend college. He was a two-way starter at Virginia and remained an avid Virginia football fan his entire life. He graduated in 1959 and credited the University with changing the trajectory of his life.
Charlotte and Al were married in 1956, and have three daughters, the other loves of his life.
After graduating from Virginia, Al was an English teacher and head football coach at Norfolk Academy, in Norfolk, Virginia. He coached the school’s only undefeated football season. He kept in touch with his players over the years and that season was one of his proudest accomplishments.
In 1964, he graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He was president of the student body.
After graduation, Al and his family returned to Lynchburg where he was assistant pastor at Rivermont Presbyterian Church. He received a call to pastor Laurel Presbyterian Church, in Laurel, Virginia in 1966. In 1969, he was named head of the Lower School at Norfolk Academy. He received his Masters in Education from the College of William and Mary in 1971.
He was named headmaster of Athens Academy, in Athens, Georgia in 1977. He next served as headmaster of the Lovett School, in Atlanta, Georgia. The Al Cash Financial Aid Endowment Fund was established in his honor. His final headmastership was at Episcopal School of Jacksonville, Florida. With vision, wisdom, charisma, and remarkable communication and interpersonal skills, he led each school on a path of continual growth and improvement.
After retiring in 1996, Charlotte and Al enjoyed living in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. He was an avid golfer, famously shooting an 80 on his 80th birthday. He loved writing and wrote two books and many poems in retirement. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife, three daughters, and two grandchildren. Charlotte and Al were married for 68 years, and he was deeply devoted to her.
Al was a man of strong morals, and lived a life full of fun, humor, and passion. He was sweetly sentimental, especially when it came to his wife and daughters, and could light up a room with his stories. He loved to make people laugh and is best known for making anyone he met feel special and cared for. He was a champion for his family, friends, faculty, staff, and students. No one who met Al forgot him. He will be deeply missed.
Al Cash was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, his children Andrea Langsfeld (Joel), Laura Michels (Vic), Sherryl Fern (Scott), his grandchildren Will Cash Donaldson and Grace Langsfeld, and his sister Bev Wells.
A Funeral Service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32082, on Thursday September 12, 2024, at 11:00 am. A reception will follow at the church.
