Jacksonville, FL- Agnes Leona (Zalewski) Leskanic (93 years) of Jacksonville, FL passed away on September 15, 2023, at her residence at Cypress Village.
Agnes was born on November 23, 1929 in Passaic, NJ to Martin and Sophie (Mlarnz) Zalewski, as the youngest of 3 children. She grew up in Garfield, NJ graduating from Garfield High School and Passaic Secretarial School. She worked for several years for Bendix Corporation in NYC, commuting each day from Garfield to Manhattan.
Agnes married the love of her life, Stephen D. Leskanic on April 14, 1956. They were married for 43 years until Steve’s death in 1999. Together they raised 3 children in the Upper Saddle River/Saddle River, NJ area. Several years ago, Agnes moved to Jacksonville, FL to be near her daughter and family, and to enjoy some Florida sunshine. Two years ago she moved to Cypress Village Assisted Living. Agnes often shared fond memories with others of her NJ life, and of her family and Welsh Corgis. She was a loving and proud mother and grandmother with a kind and generous nature, who also enjoyed her chocolates and lottery tickets.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Stephen, her parents, her sister Jane Bosies, her brother Louis Zalewski, and her son-in-law James Caldwell.
Agnes is survived by her children: daughter Sharon Leskanic (Falmouth ME), her son Bruce Leskanic and wife Barbara (Union, KY), and daughter Tara Leskanic Maw and husband Bill (Jacksonville, FL), who loved and cared for their mother dearly. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Sarah and Kathryn Caldwell, Tyler and Corey Leskanic, and Henry and Wills Maw, who all loved their GMA for her sweet and generous ways. In addition she is survived by special niece Karen Lotterhand and nephew Brian Bosies, as well as other nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Agnes’ personal caregiver, Caridad Martinez, who tended her many needs with love and dedication and to the Cypress Village Staff and Helena of Vitas Hospice for their incredible care and support.
A funeral mass will be held at St Paul’s Catholic Church, Jacksonville Beach, FL on September 25, 2023, at 11 am. Interment will occur at a later date at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, NJ. Funeral arrangements are by Quinn-Shalz. There will be no visitation hours, and the family has asked in lieu of flowers that a donation to a charity of your choice be made in Agnes’ memory. May she rest in peace.
